Understanding Prophethood in Islam: Its Purpose, Role, and Message.

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh! Welcome to The Clonicles of the Prophets. In today’s episode, we’ll explore the profound concept of Prophethood in Islam. We’ll discuss its purpose, how prophets were chosen, and the key messages they delivered, all in a concise and enlightening way. Let’s begin!

 What is Prophethood ?

Prophethood, or Nubuwwah, is a divine institution through which Allah selects and sends individuals, called prophets (anbiya), to guide humanity. Prophets serve as intermediaries between Allah and His creation, conveying His revelations, laws and teach them how to lead righteous lives.

What Is The Purpose of Prophethood ?

Guidance: To lead humans to the worship of Allah alone and to distinguish right from wrong.

Reminders: To remind people of their covenant with Allah and their ultimate accountability in the Hereafter.

•Role modeling: Prophets exemplify virtuous living and serve as role models for their communities.

Unity: To unify mankind under the belief in one God and promote justice and compassion in society.

How Did Allah Choose Prophets ?

Allah chose prophets based on His infinite wisdom and knowledge, ensuring they possessed the qualities necessary for their mission. They were divinely selected, not self-appointed.

Key Criteria:

Piety and Purity: Prophets were selected for their unwavering faith, moral integrity, and pure hearts.

Leadership Qualities: They were patient, compassionate, and resilient, capable of enduring the challenges of their mission.

Divine Revelation: Prophethood was not inherited or earned; it was a divine selection confirmed through revelations and miracles.

Examples

•Prophet Musa (AS) was chosen and spoken to directly by Allah at Mount Sinai.

•Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), known as 'Al-Ameen,' was chosen for his truthfulness and trustworthiness even before revelation.

   Numbers and Names of Prophets

In a Hadith narrated by Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

> "There were 124,000 prophets, and among them, 315 were messengers."

Reference: (Musnad Ahmad and others, though some scholars classify this hadith as weak or hasan).

The Qur’an specifically mentions 25 of them, which are;

1.Adam - آدَم

2. Idris (Enoch) - إِدْرِيس

3. Nuh (Noah) - نُوح

4. Hud - هُود

5. Salih - صَالِح

6. Ibrahim (Abraham)- إِبْرَاهِيم

7. Lut (Lot) - لُوط

8. Isma'il (Ishmael) - إِسْمَاعِيل

9. Is'haq (Isaac) - إِسْحَاق

10. Ya'qub (Jacob) - يَعْقُوب

11. Yusuf (Joseph) - يُوسُف

12. Shu'ayb (Jethro) -شُعَيْب

13. Ayyub (Job) - أَيُّوب

However, the Qur'an indicates that many other prophets were sent to different nations:

> "And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger..." (Qur'an 16:36).

"...And there are messengers We have not mentioned to you..." (Qur'an 4:164).

The Resolute Messengers (Ulul Azm)

The Ulul Azm are the five greatestP

rophets with exceptional patience, perseverance, strong will and determination. These Prophets were given significant trials and responsibilities conveying Allah's message. Members include:

1. Prophet Nuh (Noah)

2. Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham)

3. Prophet Musa (Moses)

4. Prophet Isa (Jesus)

5. Prophet Muhammad.

May the Peace and Benediction of Allah be upon them all.

Prophets Who Received Divine Books:

These are prophets who were specifically chosen by Allah to receive complete holy scriptures for guidance.

1. Ibrahim (AS) – Scriptures (Suhuf)

2. Musa (AS) – Torah (Tawrah)

3. Dawud (AS) – Psalms (Zabur)

4.‘Isa (AS) – Gospel (Injil)

5. Muhammad (ﷺ) – Qur’an

Key Difference:

Ulul Azmi Status: A unique distinction based on steadfastness and pivotal roles in conveying Allah’s message across challenging circumstances. Not all of them received holy books.

Revelation of Books: Focused on providing divine scripture for the guidance of humanity. Only some prophets were given this responsibility, and not all are part of Ulul Azmi.

Overlap:

Some Ulul Azmi prophets, like Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all), also received holy books, showing they had both distinctions. However, prophets like Dawud (AS) received a book (Zabur) but were not classified as Ulul Azmi

mi. Likewise Prophet Nuh (Peace be upon him) is classified as Ulul Azmi but have no revealed Scripture.

Core Message of Prophethood – Tawhid

Key Concepts of Tawhid (Monotheism) Conveyed by All Prophets

"The central message of all prophets was the oneness of Allah (Tawhid)

All Prophets Preached Tawhid:

Key Concepts of Tawhid:

Oneness of Lordship (Tawhid ar-Rububiyyah): Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of the universe.

Oneness of Worship (Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah): Allah alone is worthy of worship, and all acts of devotion must be directed to Him.

Oneness of Names and Attributes (Tawhid al-Asma wa-Sifat): Allah possesses unique names and attributes that reflect His perfection, without any likeness or comparison.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:"The Prophets are brothers from one father; their mothers are different, but their religion is one (Tawhid)."(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3443; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2365)

Examples Of Prophets Messages:

• Prophet Nuh (AS) calling his people to worship Allah and abandon idolatry: “Worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him.” (Qur’an 7:59).

•Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasized the Shahada: “There is no god but Allah.”

Common Themes:

1. Rejecting all forms of polytheism and associating partners with Allah.

2. Reminding people of the Hereafter and their accountability to Allah.

3. Teaching gratitude and submission to Allah’s will.

Conclusion

"Prophethood is a divine mercy from Allah, ensuring guidance and hope for humanity. From Adam (AS) to Muhammad (ﷺ), their unified mission was to establish Tawhid and teach us how to live meaningful and accountable lives.Their lives and teachings continue to inspire believers to live with faith, compassion, and a sense of accountability. Let us honor their legacy by staying steadfast in our faith."
